The v2.x GUI is coming along nicely. I have one or 2 other features in mind which I’m not ready to announce yet, but here’s a sneak peak at the UI – it’s work in progress and things are subject to change.

Checkout the change description on the release page for more information. Lots of cleanups related to command line validation and error handling for strange combinations of command line options…. and more! As always, a demo is available for download.

It’s been an interested couple of days. I’ve largely focused on the v2.x UI changes related to desktop and web based scheduling. However, yes, v1.1.0 has been released. Checkout the change description on the release page for more information. As always, a demo is available for download.

We’ve finally reached version 1.0.0, whey! A demo version has been posted on the product page, and all customers should have their license keys enabling them to unlock the demo into the fully functional product.

Enjoy!

v1.x will go on general sale shortly. I’ll be using Paypal as the only payment option and you’ll  be able to buy the product directly from this site. Expect to see a product page appear with the usual list of System Requirements, Supported features etc.

During purchase you will be asked for your HDPVR serial number. The software will be licensed to the HDPVR product and you will be able to use the software on as many macs as you like, for that one HDPVR. Users with multiple HDPVR will be required to buy a second license.

More details will be posted to the blog shortly.

The GUI has started

I’ve started pulling together some ideas for the GUI version of HDPVRCapture and I’m happy to say that it’s really to come together very nicely, I think you’re going to like it. The GUI will be available in the v2.x release and it will target the mainstream Mac HTPC audience, so you won’t need a CS degree to use it! ;) v2.x will also contain the v1.x command line version, so people who want to tightly integrate a HDPVR into their own solutions will not be left out. I’ll post some screenshots of v2.x once the command line version of HDPVRCapture v1.0.0 is on general sale.

I don’t have much to say about the GUI other than it will contain some new features which I think you’re going to like and it may be priced differently to v1.x. (Early adopters of the v1.x release will be given free upgrades to v2.x.)

I want to give potential HDPVRCapture Mac customers a feeling for the overall video quality to be expected. In other words, I want to set some expectations for overall quality. The best way to illustrate this is to make real-world samples available for download.

Over the next 2 or 3 days I’m going to generate a small demo collection of sample streams, using the application in various formats. .M2TS, .MOV and .MP4. I’ll capture at various resolutions, bitrates and with different audio codecs. I’ll make them available via this blog and continue to maintain the library as the application improves and the number of supported output formats increase.

Who knows, once I get the hand of this ‘Blogging Thing’, I might even turn on commenting! :)

HDPVRCapture v0.9.7

I’ve removed the v0.9.7 version of the download from the website. If you didn’t already know, this version was a fully featured time limited demo of the current skeleton command line application. The goal of the demo was to get the driver and basic capture/transcode features into the hands of some of the technical members of the community.

In return I got some great feedback and found a few bugs because of it, it was a useful exercise

I expect to publish a newer build sometime in the next 2-3 days.

Stay tuned.

If you’ve been following yesterdays thread on avsforum.com you’ll notice a couple of interesting responses here and here from members chefklc and Will Collier. These were in response to 1) asking the community for feedback on the HDPVRCapture application, and 2) having native AC3 support to Quicktime .mov files without down-mixing audio content or losing audio quality.

I walked through Will’s workflow late last night to manually replicate his step-by-step procedure for manually creating .mov then replicated the behavior with Applescript. I plan to add support for this into the HDPVRCapture application and get a demo build up as soon as possible.

Chefklc kindly reminded me that if I want wide spread adoption of an HDPVR application then it has to be suitable for a general audience, not specifically targeted at the technical side of the community. Common sense when you come to think about it. This is what happens when software developers take their eye off of the ball and try to satisfy a smaller group of technical users.

I guess the GUI need developed sooner than I’d previously planned! :)

I’ll be updating this blog every day as the project progresses so keep checking back. Also, keep watching the avsforum thread for the minute-by-minute blow-by-blow testing and user feedback.

Who wants Mac support for the Hauppauge HDPVR 1212 High Definition H.264 USB2 Hardware Encoder?

A couple of weeks ago I asked this question on www.avsforum.com. The response was interesting and a small group of people certainly want to see the device usable, although with various different features. Over the last few weeks I’ve put together a skeleton application which allows basic capture support. Long term the goal is to create a neat GUI and widen the appeal of the HDPVRCapture application, but only if I can get a number of supporters.

If this idea interests you then please join this thread and post your feedback. I’d love to hear from you!
